Battery: First Impressions (Sports, Shonen, Slice of Life)

Preliminary Thoughts

Now as far as anime goes. There was a particular flavor I developed a liking to. Perhaps it was my youthful brashness and exuberance that drew me towards that direction. Perhaps it was an immaterial entity guiding my path, regardless this was not the kind of anime I would have expected to like or enjoy. For more details, on this particular set of possibly pointless ramblings we leave to time.

Battery is a sports shonen anime; but it's flavor comes from a different sort of spice. From the first episode I get the impression that the author wishes to carry this by means of the hearts of the characters, the differences in personality and what promises to be something more than the typical sports plot lines. It has been done before probably, but I am only limited to what I have experienced.

How does it pan as an anime?
If it was a game one would ask me. What do you think of the graphics? Few studios slack with animations recently aside from a few that I will not name, for fear of being targeted. What stand out for me was some of the backgrounds and scenery. Couple that with the music; and the fact that it is raining outside and it is afternoon.

As a work of art. The drawing, the character design and the ambient music mesh in well. The lack of background movement make it appear closer to a visual novel in some places but nothing too serious. It's episode one people usually want to blow us away with amazing visuals but it might be intentional a tool to help tell this story. And frankly awesomeness and fun trumps "perfect reflections of real life".

Who cares about animation and music? Does it scratch the itch?
This doesn't strike me as whisky. Something to instantly give that anime shonen rush. It's more like wine. Something you sip pretentiously as you sit by the fireplace with your spouse or siblings. Something that will slowly build to an inevitable climax in an understated, yet classy way

Similar to?
Reminds me of Usagi Drop. Something you can show to your family members to prove that anime isn't demonic.

Recommendation
I give the first episode a 3.5/5 with the qualifier "it's going to get better". I've been in the mood for something unusual to my usual anime fare. This seems to be it.

Till the next time. It is me, Seijin, signing out.
